A roll-off dumpster handles the vast majority of what a cleanout or renovation throws at it. But a handful of items are off-limits — usually for safety, environmental, or legal reasons. Tossing them anyway can lead to extra fees or a refused pickup, so here’s what to keep out.
1. Hazardous Chemicals & Liquids
Paint, motor oil, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, and cleaning fluids can’t go in. They can leak, react, or contaminate. Many Volusia County household hazardous waste drop-off events accept these for free — check the county’s waste schedule.
2. Tires
Tires are banned from landfills in Florida and trap gases that damage landfill liners. Most tire shops will recycle them, often for a small per-tire fee.
3. Batteries & Electronics
Car batteries, lithium batteries, TVs, and computer monitors contain materials that need special handling. Many auto parts and electronics retailers take these back for recycling.
4. Appliances With Refrigerant
Refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners contain refrigerant that must be professionally removed before disposal. Let us know if you have one — we can point you in the right direction.
5. Wet Paint & Certain Construction Materials
Dried-out latex paint is usually fine, but wet paint isn’t. Asbestos-containing materials are also a hard no and require licensed abatement.
The rule of thumb: if it’s toxic, flammable, or leaks, keep it out of the dumpster — and just ask us if you’re unsure.
